The promised trip to Madrid that helped two grieving brothers heal

David and Lucas made a promise.  The kind of promise people make when the world feels quiet and raw — right after they said goodbye to their mother.

They’d take a trip together every summer. Just the two of them. Just to be brothers. But like many promises, life got in the way.

That is until an unexpected email turned their summer dream into a reality.

The promised summer in Madrid

“We were forever busy with work or trying to pay our bills. Burnout crept in, and the promise slowly faded behind emails and calendar reminders. Summer after summer slipped by.”

But when David opened his inbox and saw an exclusive members-only deal to Madrid, everything changed. The deal was affordable, simple to book, and allowed them to put their promise into action — no more excuses. They packed their bags and headed to Madrid — a city that would become a bridge between past memories and new experiences.

They landed in Spain in late June, when the streets of Madrid glow golden and time slows down in the plazas.

Madrid: a city of history, culture and connection

Madrid is a summer destination like no other. With its mild Mediterranean climate in June, visitors enjoy warm days and cooler evenings — perfect for strolls through the Royal Palace, El Retiro Park, or the Gran Vía. The city’s vibrant culture is complemented by its outstanding culinary scene. Tapas bars line the streets, offering the best of Spanish cuisine, from patatas bravas to jamón ibérico, paired with world-class wines.

A city that breathes art. From the world-famous Prado Museum to the Reina Sofía National Art Museum, visitors are surrounded by the works of Spain’s greatest artists, including Velázquez, Goya, Picasso, and Dalí.

“Our mother Hannah was an Art teacher, that’s how we ended up becoming and architect and a graphic designer. We wanted to dedicate the trip to her and to her life’s work which was igniting the passion for art in other people.”

During their time in the Spanish capital, David and Lucas immersed themselves in the city’s cultural gems. They spent their days wandering the Prado Museum, marveling at paintings that told stories of centuries past, and exploring the avant-garde art at the Reina Sofía, where they stood before Picasso’s Guernica — a symbol of peace and emotion.

“We walked so much during our trip, hopping through museums. We also did some tapas and wine tasting, but the most emotional part of the trip was undoubtedly experiencing an authentic flamenco opera.

It was such a powerful performance, it truly embodied our mom’s spirit.”

“We realized that, though a trip like this doesn’t erase grief, it makes room for joy. And that matters, too.”
