Every year, rain or shine, the Thompson family makes a three-generation pilgrimage to the same destination: Universal Studios. What began as a simple day trip has become an annual tradition, a bonding ritual that spans decades and builds lasting memories.
For the grandparents, Sarah and Tom, who have been using their Vacancy Rewards membership for five strait years, Universal Studios represents a connection to their youth. They nostalgically remember classic attractions that are no longer around, like Kongfrontation and Jaws.
“I still remember the dread that mechanical shark caused me, especially because it was known that its teeth were real shark teeth. The rides didn’t work like they do now, sometimes the shark would actually damage the boat, or some technical glitch would occur and the attraction would be closed all day. Still, I remember we had so much fun,” recalls Sarah.
Their children, Michael and Emily, grew up running through the streets of New York and the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal, creating their own memories along the way. Now, with their own children, they are passing the torch of tradition.
“It’s amazing to see the joy on my kids’ faces,” says Michael, “to know they’re experiencing the same magic I felt as a child.”
But beyond the rides and shows, Universal Studios is a place where the Thompson family comes together and celebrates the opportunity to spend a few days together.
“It’s the only time of year when we’re all together, without interruptions,” says Emily, “it’s our little escape from reality.”
And now, with the opening of Universal Epic Universe in 2025, the family tradition is about to begin a new chapter. Especially for the youngest Thompsons, who look forward to enjoying the new attractions from the How to Train Your Dragon franchise.
